Stay Legal With Your Dashcam

Photo by Jan Kronies on Unsplash

Dashcams have become indispensable tools for modern drivers, offering a myriad of benefits that extend far beyond mere video recording. These compact devices, mounted discreetly on vehicle dashboards, serve as silent witnesses to the ever-unfolding drama of the road. Beyond capturing breathtaking scenery or unexpected encounters, dashcams provide invaluable evidence in case of accidents or disputes, offering clarity and peace of mind in uncertain situations. Moreover, they serve as proactive safety measures, encouraging responsible driving behaviors and enhancing overall road awareness. From insurance claims to legal proceedings, the advantages of dashcams are undeniable, making them an essential addition to any vehicle in today’s fast-paced world.

There is a need for caution though.  UK motorists are being warned of a little-known dash cam mistake that could end up invalidating their insurance. Dash cams have surged in popularity in recent years, with the RAC recently estimating that 2.9 million people in the UK are currently using one.Footage gleaned from dash cams can be a valuable tool in protecting drivers from fraudulent claims, theft, or recording illegal driving behaviours. Some insurance providers also offer lower policy premiums for motorists who have a dash cam fitted.

But Graham Conway, Managing Director at Select Van Leasing, warns that if you’ve got a dash cam hard-wired into your vehicle – rather than simply plugged-in to your car’s cigarette lighter socket or USB port – you need to notify your insurer.

He explains: “It’s frustrating to think that doing something proactive to protect yourself from a claim, or even theft, might come back to bite you, but motorists need to be aware of the legalities concerning dash cams.

“Some of the more expensive dash cams on the market are wired directly to the car’s battery, rather than simply plugging-in to a socket in the vehicle’s cabin.

“Being hard-wired means the dash cam offers added protection and can remain switched on, even when the engine isn’t running, so that it continues to record after the owner has vacated the driver’s seat.

“While a plug-in dash cam is considered a simple accessory in the eyes of most insurers, a hard-wired dash cam is deemed to be a ‘modification’ to your vehicle, and you need to notify your insurer that you’ve got one fitted.

“If you don’t, and the worst does ultimately happen, you might not be covered against a claim – even though you could have clear evidence to prove any wrongdoing.”

When asked for clarification by Select Car Leasing, leading car insurance comparison platform Confused.com confirmed that if a dashcam is wired to the vehicle and becomes a permanent feature, it would need to be declared to an insurer. A plug-in dash cam wouldn’t need to be declared.

There are other rules concerning dash cams that motorists need to be aware of.

The Highway Code states that windscreens and windows must be kept clear and free from obstructions at all times.

If your dash cam is positioned on your windscreen in a way that impedes your vision, you could be hit with a £100 on-the-spot fine. And if police deemed the obstruction to constitute driving without due care and attention, fines could rise to £1,000 while you’d face three penalty points on your licence.

Dash cam footage can also be used as evidence of wrongdoing in court so long as it shows adequate detail, such as vehicle number plates.

Select Van Leasing’s Graham Conway adds: “Dash cam footage is a two-way street – in that it could be used as evidence for you, against another driver, or as evidence for your own poor driving behaviours.”

Dash cam manufacturer Nextbase also runs the National Dash Cam Safety Portal (NDSP), which allows motorists to upload footage to report a road traffic incident to the relevant police force.

Did you know that your computer manufacturer may include life threatening Components By insidebattle 80% of fake chips come from old electronics not disposed of properly. Dive in and we’ll expose the underbelly of the counterfeit hardware market and give you tips to identify genuine parts, ensuring your devices are safe and secure.

A startling 80% of global computers could be compromised, not by email scams or nefarious hackers, but by something much more sinister lurking within the very hardware itself—counterfeit parts. A recent survey shows these bogus components may come preloaded with malware, an unseen threat that could wreak havoc on a system, and by extension, its data. This article aims to unravel the dark world of the counterfeit hardware market and offer guidance on discerning genuine parts from fakes, helping you keep your devices secure.

The Counterfeit Culprit

Counterfeit hardware represents a critical threat to individual and corporate cybersecurity. Parts that seem innocuous and genuine may carry hidden malicious software programs—malware—that can silently steal information, damage systems, or allow unauthorized access to networks.

Geonode Technology Expert Josh Gordon states, “Counterfeit hardware is cybercrime’s Trojan horse. By integrating malware into the very fabric of a system, cybercriminals can bypass many security defenses unnoticed, opening a back door to your most vulnerable data.”

Guileful Gigabytes: Identify the Fakes

Knowing the enemy is half the battle. Here are some tips to identify counterfeit parts in your computer:

  • Quality and Craftsmanship: Genuine parts are typically high-quality products. Counterfeit components often show poor craftsmanship, with visibly low-quality materials and may have misspellings, inconsistent fonts, or incorrect logos.
  • Price: If a deal seems too good to be true, it likely is. Genuine parts from trusted manufacturers carry heftier price tags due to the cost of design, materials, and rigorous testing.
  • Documentation: Genuine parts come with proper documentation such as guarantees, invoices, and certification of origin. Counterfeit products often lack such support, providing vague or missing documents.

Play Defense: Secure Your Devices

Once you’ve identified the counterfeit culprit, it’s time to take the necessary steps to ensure your devices’ safety and security.

  • Purchase Wisely: Buy hardware from trusted retailers and suppliers. Check for certification or authorized reseller status with prominent manufacturers.
  • Run Routine Checks: Regularly use software like antiviruses, authenticator apps, or firmware verification to scan your system for hidden threats.
  • Report Suspected Counterfeits: If you suspect a counterfeit, inform the appropriate local authority. Reporting helps fight the counterfeit market and prevents others from falling prey to it.

Geonode‘s Josh Gordon advises, “Being proactive in identifying and mitigating risks is the hallmark of effective cybersecurity.”

Counterfeit Awareness: Knowledge is Power

In a landscape where one in four computers might be compromised, knowing how to identify counterfeit parts and how to mitigate their risks are invaluable skills. The fight against this hardware hoax is ongoing, but with awareness, vigilance, and astute purchasing, we can ensure our devices remain secure and cyber threats contained. As Josh Gordon insightfully mentions, “In the game of chess that is cybersecurity, every player must be a king.” So, go ahead, arm yourself with knowledge and rule the cyber realm.

Learning to perform simple car maintenance and repairs can bring a multitude of benefits to vehicle owners. Firstly, it empowers individuals with a sense of self-sufficiency and independence. Being able to change the oil, replace the air filter, or fix a flat tire means less reliance on professional mechanics for routine tasks. This newfound skill can also lead to significant cost savings. Routine maintenance performed at home eliminates labor charges and allows for the purchase of affordable aftermarket parts. Additionally, a basic understanding of car repairs can contribute to increased vehicle longevity. Timely identification and resolution of minor issues prevent them from escalating into major, more costly problems. Moreover, having hands-on knowledge of one’s vehicle fosters a deeper connection with the car, promoting a sense of responsibility and care. Overall, the ability to undertake simple car maintenance tasks not only saves money but also enhances personal skills, instills confidence, and promotes a more conscientious approach to vehicle ownership.

As millions of Brits plan to hit the road on their Christmas get-aways, new research reveals the extent to which many of us are baffled as to how to operate even the most basic car functions.

In fact, a staggering thirteen percent of Brits are driving around, with no idea of how to even open the bonnet of their own vehicle.

The research finds that 43 percent of Brits are unsure on where spark plugs live or how to change the oil, whilst 42 percent can’t replace a headlight bulb, 35 percent can’t find the fan belt and 31 percent would have no idea how to jump start the car.

And while half (49 percent) say they want to be a greener and more sustainable driver, 78 percent have no idea they can request “green parts” when getting their car fixed, according to the poll by LV= General Insurance, while 82 percent didn’t know they existed.

The research comes as LV= General Insurance teams up with TV presenter and car enthusiast, Rory Reid, to support its Green Parts initiative, helping customers replace damaged car parts with recycled green parts.

Michael Golding, Network Manager at LV= General Insurance, “It’s encouraging to see drivers want to be more sustainable, as using green parts to repair a car has a 47 percent lower carbon impact than using brand-new parts. We’re on a mission to make more car owners aware of them.”

The survey found a fifth (21 percent) of respondents couldn’t even tell you the size of their car engine, with one in five (18 percent) confessing that they can’t turn on the cruise or traction control.

Asked why they don’t know anything about the “inner workings” of their car, nearly half (46 percent) don’t feel they need to know – as it is just a means of getting from A to B.

42 percent claim they only really worry when something goes wrong.

On average drivers experience three breakdowns a year, spending as much as £305 on repairs.
